With the fast development of computer technology, a great amount of books on that subject are translated into Chinese and occupy a large part of the book shelves. But books on other subjects seldom get the chance to be released in Chinese. They are just reprinted in English. It seems that the assumption is well accepted, that people learning or interested in other fields could read and understand English well, and translation of scientific and technical documents is not so in need. However, is that true?

Following are some facts that I happened to know. (来源:英语聊天室 http://chat.EnglishCN.com)

Once a university required freshmen spend a whole year for English study only. They explain that their further studies would use textbooks in English.

Second case, some education systems once were quite keen on bilingual teaching, with textbooks in English of course. So they invested much to make the teacher qualified. One of my town fellows majoring in Math who attended one of such kind of courses said: “The teacher is kind. When we can’t catch him in English, he teaches in Chinese. And he even rectifies the grammar errors in homework for us.”

Third, a student said he would like to find more Chinese references when chatting with an experienced engineer. The engineer just answered straight: “Read English documents no matter you like it or not. No other choice cause seldom good resources in Chinese.”

Once when a question about technological translation is asked in an engineers’ forum, an engineer who have worked in that field for many years said: “This type of positions are requested by big electronic corporations where there is a big volume of technical documents that need to be translated to all kinds of languages. European companies will hire English translators; American and British ones will look for German, French and Spanish technical translators. The translators are not just people that speak the tongue, but have some kind of technical background and understand the electronics jargon.
Some give you some kind of document to translate as a test, before hiring you!”

What has been told through the above stories? Let’s analyze them carefully.
